What does Rozzum unit 7134 stand for? The Wild Robot.

The Wild Robot lore

The name “Rozzum” is a tribute to the Czech Karel Čapek, who popularized and defined the word “robot”.

“Rozum” (in Czech, Polish and Slovak) means mind, reason.

Čapek’s “R. U. R.” was first presented by the Theater Guild in New York in 1922-23 and has been one of the most discussed plays in America at the time.

What robots looked like in Čapek’s play.

Yep, they had numbers.

“R. U. R.” = Rossum’s Universal Robots

In the play Rossum is the name of the scientist who once took himself to ‘distant island’ and created the robots and the R. U. R. company.

The Wild Robot vs R. U. R.

(no spoilers)

Aside from a clear reference in the naming of the main character, the two titles differ significantly. To me, it seems that the connection can be summarized in this quote from the play:

Evidently our planet is too small for giants.

Therefore Roz finds her own among the tiniest, animals.
